Resending: How to Learn Anything

Hey Music Makers,

You know that feeling when you unbox a brand-new synth or plugin, fire it up, and then… stare at it blankly because you have no idea where to start?

Yeah, me too. Manuals exist for a reason, but let’s be real—nobody wants to sit and read 100 pages of dry text before making music.

Luckily, I’ve found a way to never read a manual again and still learn everything I need to know about my gear. And no, it’s not magic (though it feels like it). It’s NotebookLM—an AI tool that turns those mind-numbing instruction manuals into something actually useful.

I explored a similar idea in a past video using ChatGPT to break down software manuals, but NotebookLM takes things even further. It’s like having a personal tutor for every piece of music tech you own. Let’s dive in.

What Is NotebookLM and Why Should You Care?

Google’s NotebookLM is an AI-powered research assistant that lets you upload documents (like synth manuals, DAW guides, or mixing cheat sheets) and then ask it questions in plain English. Instead of flipping through endless pages trying to find how to modulate an LFO, you can just ask:

“How do I assign an LFO to filter cutoff on the ASM Hydrasynth?”

And boom—you get a straight-to-the-point answer, no digging required.

Imagine having instant access to all the knowledge in your manuals but without the hassle of searching, scrolling, or skimming through irrelevant sections.

How NotebookLM Makes Learning Music Gear Effortless

Here’s why I’m hooked on using NotebookLM for learning hardware and software instruments:

1. Instant Answers to Any Question

Instead of manually searching for a feature in a massive manual, you can just ask NotebookLM directly. Need to know how to set up an external MIDI controller in Ableton? Just ask. Trying to figure out the difference between “Sample & Hold” and “Smooth Random” LFOs? NotebookLM will explain it in a way that actually makes sense.

2. Personalised Summaries

If you’re new to a piece of gear, you can upload the manual and tell NotebookLM:

“Give me a beginner-friendly summary of this synth’s key features.”

It’ll strip away the unnecessary fluff and give you just what you need to get started—without overwhelming you with deep-dive technical jargon (unless you want that).

3. Step-by-Step Guides for Complex Features

Sometimes manuals assume you already understand the basics, but let’s be honest—some features are way more complicated than they should be. Instead of reading a vague description, you can ask NotebookLM:

“Explain how to create a wavetable patch from scratch on the Korg Modwave, step by step.”

And it’ll break it down like a helpful YouTube tutorial.

4. Cross-Referencing Multiple Manuals

If you’re using multiple pieces of gear together—like a hardware sequencer controlling a modular synth—NotebookLM can help you make sense of it all. Upload both manuals and ask:

“How do I sync my Squarp Pyramid sequencer with my Moog Mother-32?”

It will pull relevant details from both documents and give you a clear answer, saving you the headache of flipping between two PDFs.

5. Never Forget Important Features

We’ve all been there—you learn something cool in a manual, use it once, and then completely forget how to do it later. Instead of re-reading the whole thing, you can just ask NotebookLM:

“Remind me how to route audio through the OB-6’s filter using the external input.”

It’s like having a perfect memory for every piece of gear you own.

How I Use NotebookLM in My Studio

To put this to the test, I uploaded a few manuals for my hardware synths and plugins. Here’s how it completely changed my workflow:

Learning a new synth in minutes: Instead of spending hours reading the Hydrasynth manual, I just asked NotebookLM to highlight its best features and show me how to make a pad patch from scratch.

Mastering obscure plugin functions: I love u-he’s Zebra synth, but some of its deeper functions are insanely complicated. NotebookLM helped me figure out how to use its multi-stage envelopes properly in a fraction of the time.

Troubleshooting faster than ever: When I hit a weird issue with my Elektron Digitakt not sending MIDI properly, NotebookLM pulled the relevant troubleshooting section instantly—no endless scrolling required.

Comparing different gear before buying: Before I buy the Arturia MiniFreak, I uploaded its manual alongside the MicroFreak’s and asked NotebookLM for a detailed comparison of the two. It gave me a breakdown of features, differences, and even suggestions based on my workflow.

How to Set Up NotebookLM for Your Music Production Workflow

If you want to try this out yourself, here’s how to get started:

Step 1: Get Access to NotebookLM

It’s still in early access, so you might need to join the waitlist. Just go to Google’s NotebookLM site and sign up.

Step 2: Upload Your Manuals

Start with the ones you use the most—your DAW, your favourite synths, drum machines, or effects plugins.

Step 3: Start Asking Questions

Test it out with simple things like:
- “How do I sidechain in FL Studio?”
- “What’s the best way to automate filter sweeps on the Moog Matriarch?”
- “How do I set up external audio routing in the MPC Live?”

Step 4: Build Your Own Knowledge Hub

You can create notebooks for different categories—like one for synths, one for drum machines, and one for DAW techniques—so all your knowledge is easily accessible whenever you need it.

Step 5: Never Read a Manual Again (Unless You Want To)

From here, just use NotebookLM as your go-to music production assistant. Need a refresher on a feature? Just ask. Want to learn an advanced trick? It’s got your back.

Final Thoughts: Is This the Future of Learning Music Gear?

Honestly, yes. NotebookLM isn’t just a convenience—it’s a game-changer for anyone who wants to actually understand their gear without spending hours flipping through PDFs.

I’ve already shown how ChatGPT can help with this process in a previous video, but NotebookLM takes it to the next level by directly referencing the original manuals and giving accurate, contextual answers.

For music producers, this means:
✅ Faster learning = more time making music
✅ No more frustration with vague or poorly written manuals
✅ A personalised assistant for every synth, sequencer, and plugin you own

So, are you ready to never read a manual again? Try it out and let me know how it changes your workflow!

Until next time, keep creating and stay inspired!

Cheers,
